Our sewing program is designed for women who have come to the United States via the Refugee Program or Humanitarian Parole. Students must have been in the United States for 7 years or less. This is in part because our program incorprates Vocational ESL, basic math and case management, plus we provide translation of some of our materials in Dari, Pashto and Arabic. We have three available courses:
Sewing 101 (mandatory):
All students must take our Sewing 101 course, which lasts from September until May. Childcare is provided, and the class covers using an electric machine, creating a basic sewing skills portfolio, numeracy and measuring, job skills, and resume building.
Sewing 201 (Quilting):
For students who do not want future employment in sewing, or who need further skills building, we offer a quilting basics class from September to May. Childcare is provided, and students hone in on design skills and accurate measuring, cutting and sewing. The final project is a quilt that features 9 different block styles.
Sewing 202 (Manufacturing):
For students with the necessary English and sewing skills, we provide a manufacturing class that teaches alterations, clothing construction, advanced math, quality control, and patterning skills. We also have a “Learn and Earn” unit, where students make custom stockings, as well as items to sell at our annual Christmas market. This class provides childcare, but the schedule is a bit different, where each month, students focus on a skill and work to acheive mastery in that skill. They only receive a certificate if they have successfully passed a certain number of skills units. Students with certificates are then eligeble to be a part of our job program, where we match them with employers and provide recommendations.
